A Day in Alta
The View From My Beer
Today I enjoyed a 0.5 litre of Norland pils, a northern Norwegian beer brewed in Tromsø. The venue was Puskas Musikk, the world’s northernmost record store, which doubles as a bar.
Alta
A city of 75,000 on Norway’s northern coast, at the head of Alta Fjord. It’s known for views of the Northern Lights, which inspired the cascading architecture of the Northern Lights Cathedral, built in 2013. Thousands of prehistoric rock carvings are at nearby Hjemmeluft Bay. South of town, the Alta River runs through steep Alta Canyon.
My Walk
After a water taxi followed by a shuttle bus to central Alta, my walk commenced in downtown Alta. I quickly found a few of the attractions I was looking for – Northern Lights Cathedral and Alta Church. Form there I made my way to the local marina on the shores of the Alta Fjord. I then returned back to town to find a pub. That’s when I encountered the world’s northernmost record store which just happened to also be a bar.
Northern Lights Cathedral
Built in 2013, Northern Lights Cathedral was easy to spot as its striking architecture was visible on arrival to central Alta. The entrance fee was $10, but well worth it as the inside was imply stunning.
Alta Church
Prior to the construction of Northern Lights Cathedral, Alta’s primary church was Alta Church. This was a short walk away. It was surrounded by a giant cemetary, which I found surprisingly interesting because of the modern style of headstones that were employed.
ATVs
In this part of the world All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) were quite common. They were often seen parked on properties and sometimes would pass by as I was walking the streets. With such amazing countryside, it is easy to see why these things are so popular.
Fjord Cruise
After our day in port, we again enjoyed a cruise up the Alta Fjord before heading out to sea and on to our next destination of Molde.
