The View From My Beer
A stubbie of Lyra Golden Ale from the nearby Greek island of Crete. The venue is Olia, a restaurant in the village of Megalochori. This was one of the most enjoyable beers I have experienced since I started my journeys. I can’t imagine a place more Mediterranean than this. The weather was a perfect 26C with a refreshing breeze. There was a beautiful blue and white Greek church in front of me, cobblestone streets and I was surrounded by beautiful restaurants.
It’s getting harder to have just the one beer and the one view. Today I gave up and took many views from my beer as I thoroughly enjoyed one of my longest walks yet through the villages around Santorini.

Santorini

Over the last few years, Santorini has managed to make its presence felt in the tourist industry, becoming one of the most popular destinations worldwide. The main reasons for its popularity include its unique sunsets over the caldera and the scenic streets full of white-washed houses. Plenty of people, choose Santorini as their marriage or honeymoon destination, as its impressive vistas, and photogenic landscapes always create a romantic setting.
My Walk
I had enjoyed Mykonos so much I was really looking forward to my visit to Santorini. My plan for the day was to find a way to get to the top and then take a walk along the coastline taking in the spectacular views.
The Climb

I was up bright and early again today as I had been allocated a 8am water taxi. As I got off the ship I could see how far the town was above where we were being dropped off in hand port below. As I arrived at what is known as the Old Port, I had three options to get to the top of a 270 metre climb…
- The first was to pay 10€ for a cable car to the top. This was the fastest and easiest way to make the journey.
- It also cost 10€ for a donkey ride (plus tip)
- And then there is walking up a steep slippery cobblestone path covered in smelly donkey shit. 💩
The trip up was one thing, but I found out later in the day the smell only gets worse! From the top, the view was nothing short of spectacular. Santorini was already living up to the high expectations that I had.

Caldera

The island of Santorini was created by a massive volcanic eruption around 1600 B.C. that may have contributed to the fall of the Minoan civilization and potentially inspired the myth of Atlantis. The island is still the home to an active volcano known as the Caldera.
