The View From My Beer
Today’s view is a pint of Beamish in a very colorful arcade outside Mutton Lane Inn. It was part of a bake-off for me to decide what was my favorite Irish Stout. I had a pint of Murphy’s earlier in the day but decided this beer had the best view. Every visit to Ireland it has always been a challenge to decide which beer provides the best view. Just as it has been a challenge to decide which is the best beer.
Note: Before 2025 I had assumed Ireland was synonymous with Guinness. One of the joy’s of travel is expanding your horizons of knowledge. In 1996 I even formed a company called Knowledge Horizons! On learning the Irish have three Irish Stouts that tickle their fancy, I have been trying to decide which one I prefer. I had often drunk Guinness as an alternative to lagers, especially when visiting Irish pubs.
Cork
The second stop on my 16-day cruise to Greenland & Iceland involved a return to Cobh. Last time I took a tour to nearby Blarney and Kinsale. Knowing I was returning, I had left the city of Cork to explore on this my second visit. Cork is Ireland’s second largest city with a population of 225,000. It is also home to two of the three popular Irish Stouts – Murphy’s and Beamish. The other one being Guinness, which is brewed in Dublin.
My Walk

Cork

The train station in Cobh is conveniently located next to the cruise terminal. It was a short 25-minute trip to Cork. I had no plans for the day. I have always had so much fun on my previous visits to Ireland, I figured I would just enjoy myself and take a random walk around town to see what I can find. The city of Cork lies on the River Lee. The river branches into two arms, with the central part of Cork lying between the two branches. I spent much of the day zigzagging up and down between the two branches of the river.
Beamish or Murphy’s?

I have always enjoyed Guinness, but on my last visit to Ireland I decided I enjoyed Beamish and Murphy’s more. My plan has always been to enjoy one beer each day as part of my walk, so that I can share the view with my friends and family who can’t be here with me (yep I’m a team player). I have have varied from that plan a few times, usually because I find an even better view than the first that dictates a second photo. I went into today with the plan to enjoy both a Beamish and a Murphy’s. I (correctly) figured their would b plenty of Irish pubs to provide a suitable venue. I ended up enjoying both beers, and they both provided stunning views. I had a pint of Murphy’s at ‘The Oval’. Inside was just the most stunning Irish pub I have ever visited. The pint of Beamish I had was outside in a very colorful arcade at the ‘Mutton Lane Inn’. I just couldn’t choose given the quality of the beer and the stunning views they provided. I guess I am just going to have to find a way to come back to Ireland again and conducts some further research. All in the name of science of course!
